Kindergarten 2 Open Class Recap: All About Scales with Tr. Smith

On 28th September (Sunday) Tr. Smith conducted a K2 Open Class on “All About Scales” at Kangaroo Study.

This engaging session introduced young learners to the concept of scales in a fun and interactive way. Students explored different types of scales and discovered the kinds of questions they can help answer, laying a solid foundation for future algebraic thinking. The class combined play, exploration, and discovery, making learning both enjoyable and meaningful!

1.Lesson Walkthrough

From the very beginning, students were actively engaged, responding enthusiastically to Tr. Smith’s dynamic and hands-on approach. The classroom atmosphere was both focused and encouraging, allowing students to gain confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

The worksheets are thoughtfully designed by Tr. Smith to be fun and engaging for K2 children while matching their learning pace.

Students remained attentive throughout, listening closely, participating in discussions, asking questions, and eagerly volunteering answers.

When some students showed great initiative by approaching Tr. Smith with additional questions. He took time to explain tricky concepts in detail, helping them strengthen their understanding.

Tr. Smith connected with parents, sharing insights about the lesson and addressing their queries. This open exchange created a supportive bridge between classroom learning and home reinforcement.

Tr. Smith is the Head of the Primary 1 Department and the lead teacher for the P1–P3 Math Olympiad program. Recognized for excellence in teaching, he was awarded the "Best Young Teacher" in Singapore by Fang Tian Education in 2024.

His students have consistently achieved remarkable results. In 2024, during the P5 NMOS, out of eight students, two ranked within the Top 30, and five achieved Gold awards. In 2025, his P6 students excelled in multiple competitions: out of ten students in the RMO, two obtained High Distinctions and four achieved Distinctions. In the SASMO competition, five students earned Gold awards, with one student ranking among the Top 3 in Singapore.
