A Comprehensive Guide to Singapore's Secondary School Types
Choosing the right secondary school is one of the most important decisions for families in Singapore. At this stage, students begin to explore their interests more deeply and prepare for future academic or career pathways. From schools that follow the national curriculum to specialised programmes, there is a wide range of options to cater to different learning needs, talents and aspirations. Understanding these pathways will help parents and students make informed decisions about the most suitable secondary school journey.
Types of Secondary Schools
There are 5 main types of schools in the Singapore education system. PIC 1. Government and Government-aided SchoolsGovernment and Government-aided schools make up the majority (89.2%) of secondary schools in Singapore. They are best known for offering the national curriculum at affordable, standardised fees, making quality education accessible to all students.
What Is the Curriculum Like?
  • Government schools offer quality education based on the national curriculum, with access to a broad mix of electives, applied subjects and student development programmes.
  • Government-aided schools, on the other hand, were originally set up by community organisations to serve the educational needs of their respective communities. Today, they follow the same curriculum standards as government schools and charge standardised fees.
Exams and Higher Education Pathways
Some schools follow a four-year programme ending with the GCE O-Level exams, while others offer a six-year Integrated Programme (IP) where students directly take the GCE A-Level exams at the end of 6 years.
How Much Are the School Fees?
School fees for Government and Government-aided schools are kept affordable through subsidies, with the exact amount depending on the student’s nationality: PIC 2. Independent Schools Beyond Government and Government-aided schools, some families might opt for Independent schools, which make up the next largest category of secondary schools in Singapore (5.4%).
What Is the Curriculum Like?
With the flexibility to determine school fees, academic and non-academic programmes, Independent schools generally offer greater flexibility in curriculum design and school programmes.
Exams and Higher Education Pathways
Most Independent schools offer GCE O-Level or A-Level examinations just like the Government and Government-aided schools, but some also offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. There are currently 2 Independent schools that offer the IB Diploma Programme:
  • Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)
  • St. Joseph's Institution
How Much Are the School Fees?
School fees in Independent schools are varied as the schools have freedom to set their own fees.
PIC
School fees for Independent schools are generally more expensive than Government or Government-aided schools. For Singaporean Citizens, fees for Independent schools are at least 10 times that of Government or Government-aided schools. 3. Specialised Independent Schools (SIS) Specialised Independent schools (SIS) are a niche category of Independent schools, established for students who demonstrate exceptional talent or interest in specific domains. There are currently 4 SIS schools in Singapore, with a shared goal to provide students with focused and specialised learning environments, allowing them to fully develop their strengths and specialties from the start of their secondary school years. What Is the Curriculum Like? The curriculum is characterised by a strong professional focus, concentration on specific fields (such as mathematics, science, the arts, sports, or applied learning), multiple pathways for further education, and flexible learning approaches. In addition to core subjects, these schools provide in-depth training in students' areas of strength, offering diverse progression routes through programmes such as the IB Diploma, school-based diplomas, or courses linked to polytechnics. Who Should Apply? SIS admit students with strong talents and interests in specific areas such as Mathematics, Science, Arts, Sports, and applied learning. Admission is usually through the Direct School Admission for Secondary schools (DSA-SEC) process. Exams and Higher Education Pathways The 4 SIS each offer different exams and further education pathways:
  • NUS High School of Mathematics and Science: Six-year IP (NUS High Diploma)
  • School of Science and Technology: Four-year programme (GCE O-Level) or Six-year IP (Integrated Diploma Programme)
  • Singapore Sports School: Four-year programme (GCE O-Level or GCE N-Level)
  • School of the Arts: Six-year IP (IB Diploma)
How Much Are the School Fees?
School fees in SIS are varied as the schools have freedom to set their own fees.
PIC
School fees for SIS are generally more expensive than Government or Government-aided schools. For Singaporean Citizens, fees for SIS are at least 10 times that of Government or Government-aided schools. 4. Specialised Schools Specialised schools offer an alternative educational pathway for students who may face challenges in the mainstream academic environment. They combine academic learning with vocational training, emphasizing hands-on experience, character development, and confidence-building, while preparing students for future further education or employment. What Is the Curriculum Like? The curriculum integrates practical and academic learning, with a strong focus on vocational skills such as IT, mechanical work, or hospitality management. At the same time, it nurtures students' independence, sense of responsibility, and problem-solving abilities, while providing clear pathways for further education or career opportunities.
Who Should Apply?
Specialised schools are designed for students who do not qualify for secondary courses after PSLE, are only eligible for Posting Group (PG) 1, or the PG1/2 Option Band. Students will graduate with the ITE Skills Certificate (ISC) or ITE Skills Subject Certificate (ISSC). Exams and Higher Education Pathways
  • NorthLight School: ITE Skills Certificate (ISC)
  • Assumption Pathway School: ITE Skills Certificate (ISC)
  • Crest Secondary School: ITE Skills Subject Certificate (ISSC)
  • Spectra Secondary School: ITE Skills Subject Certificate (ISSC)
What is the Integrated Programme (IP)?
Many parents may mistake IP schools as a separate type of school like the aforementioned school categories, but IP is actually a curriculum type, independent of school types. The Integrated Programme (IP) is a 6-year course leading to the GCE A-Level examination or International Baccalaureate Diploma or NUS High School Diploma. Students in the IP do not need to take the O-Level or Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) in Secondary 4.
