Things You Must Know About the EOY Exam
With just over a month to the Sec 1 EOY exam, many parents are curious about its importance and difficulty. This article will share the key things you must know.
Why the EOY Exam Matters
1. A Full Assessment of Sec 1 LearningThe End-of-Year (EOY) exam is the most comprehensive assessment of students’ Sec-1 math journey, which covers all topics taught throughout the year, making it the best reflection of students’ true grasp of math concepts.

2. A Good Opportunity to Build ConfidenceFor students, exam results strongly affect their future learning attitude. Many parents notice that poor results often make children lose interest and confidence in the subject.
Similarly, good results can give children great confidence and motivate them to keep learning.
For many students, this is their first full-scale secondary school exam. Performing well in the EOY not only boosts their confidence but also sets the tone for how they approach math in future years.
3. A Key Factor of Sec 1 Assessment PerformanceAs shown in the chart below, in most schools the EOY exam accounts for 60% of the overall Sec 1 assessment. This means the EOY exam results have a major impact on the overall performance assessment.
Why EOY Exam is Difficult
1. Wide Exam ScopeAs mentioned above, the biggest challenge of the EOY exam is its wide coverage. All 14 chapters of the Sec 1 textbook are tested, and some schools even include topics from Sec 2. The average weightage of key topics after analysis, as shown in the chart below.
2. Complex Question TypesNot only are there many topics, but each topic is tested in multiple ways. A single concept may have two or three different types of questions. For example, as shown below, some angle questions test calculation using shape properties, while others combine geometry with algebra to solve for angles.

The last challenge is time management. Many students in previous WA exams didn’t know how to divide their time. Since some EOY exams last over two hours, students often don’t know whether to focus on hard questions or stick to easy and medium ones.

How to Prepare Well for the EOY Exam
To prepare for the EOY exam’s wide range of topics and question types, revision should start early. Begin by reviewing past mistakes, then do extra exercises to prepare for question types in EOY. Since school exercises are often too easy, many students lack suitable practice.
Another approach is to experience the EOY exam in advance. This helps students learn how to manage their time confidently and handle the exam question types more easily.
To do that, we will hold a EOY Mock Exam on 14th Sep, 3-5 PM.
