From “I Don’t Know” to “Let Me Try!”: Kangaroo Study's Lower Primary Semester 1 Journey Recap

Semester 1 has come to a meaningful close. In this recap, we invited our lower primary teachers — Tr Smith, Tr Ming Wei, and Tr Zhang Tao — to share their observations on the challenges, progress, and growth they saw in their students, as well as what lies ahead for the June Holiday programme.

“Building Interest, Confidence and Good Learning Habits”

Hi everyone, I’m Tr Smith! 🥰 From 10 January to 10 May, our P1 and P2 students completed a 16-lesson learning journey together. Looking back, what encouraged me most was not only the knowledge they learnt, but also the good learning habits they gradually built.

As the Math Olympiad is more challenging than school math, students are bound to write steps, but how they should write and think is what matters the most.

In terms of interest, from the very first lessons, I have seen students be quite reluctant to try the bonus questions apart from the worksheets. But later, as lessons advanced, the students used to raise their hands and ask for bonus questions.

Although Semester 1 has ended, review worksheets have been prepared to help students keep practising during the break. It has been heartening to see them grow in confidence, interest, and learning attitude.

Throughout this semester, I have also received a lot of love from my students and encouraging feedback from parents.

The Next Step|Tr Smith's June Holiday Plan for P1 & P2

The June Holiday lessons will start from 30 May, and preparation has already begun in advance🤩

From designing worksheets to selecting suitable props, examples, and classroom activities, I hope to make each lesson meaningful, engaging, and easy for young learners to connect with. The goal is to help students see that Math is not only challenging, but also interesting and enjoyable when they learn it step by step.

Through the June Holiday programme, students will continue to review key concepts, strengthen problem-solving skills, and build greater confidence when facing new types of questions.

“From Unfamiliar Challenges to Confident Problem Solving”

Hi everyone, I’m Tr Ming Wei! 😊 As Semester 1 comes to an end, I’d like to share some of my thoughts and observations from the past few months.

When the P3 class first started, many students had little or no experience with Math Olympiad-style questions. Some found the questions difficult and needed time to get used to this new way of thinking.

To support them, I arranged one-to-one sessions to clarify doubts, revisit weaker topics, and guide them step by step through different problem-solving methods. I also encouraged them to ask questions whenever they were unsure, because real learning happens when students are willing to speak up instead of keeping their confusion to themselves.

Over time, it was very encouraging to see their progress. One boy, in particular, struggled a lot at the beginning and often could not complete the before-class and after-class tests independently. But he did not give up. With weekly support, regular practice, and a willingness to learn from mistakes, he gradually became more confident. After around two months, he was able to consistently score full marks. His journey reminds me that progress takes time. With patience, guidance, and steady effort, every small step can lead to meaningful growth.

I’m also very thankful for the trust and encouragement from parents throughout Semester 1. Their kind feedback means a lot to me, and it motivates me to continue supporting every child with patience and care.

“Growing Through Higher Difficulty and Better Learning Strategies”

Hi everyone, I’m Tr Zhang Tao. Semester 1 has officially come to an end, and I’m very glad to see how our P3 students have grown through a more challenging stage of learning.

Throughout the semester, students worked on topics such as word problems, logical reasoning, clever calculation, perimeter, area, and angles. More importantly, I saw them becoming more patient and thoughtful when facing difficult questions. Instead of giving up quickly, they began to pause, break the question down, and try different methods.

To me, this is the most meaningful growth. Math is not just about getting the final answer right, but about learning how to think and keep trying. As we move on to the next stage, I hope our students will continue to stay focused, build good habits, and keep making steady progress. I’m also very thankful for the recognition and support from parents as well.

The Next Step|Tr Zhang & Tr Ming Wei‘s P3 June Holiday Plan

The June Holiday classes are about to begin. Having lessons consecutively may be challenging for the children, but if they persist, it will also be a valuable opportunity for intensive thinking training.

During this period, students will have the chance to reinforce what they have learnt in Semester 1, practise more challenging question types, and further strengthen their problem-solving habits.

I hope all students will stay focused, keep working hard, and continue making steady progress during the holiday programme.

In Conclusion

As we move into the June Holiday programme and the next stage of learning, we hope our students will continue to stay curious, practise consistently, and believe in their own ability to grow through effort.

At Kangaroo Study, we believe that lower primary math learning is not just about solving more questions. It is about helping children build the confidence, habits, and thinking skills that will support them in the long run❤️
