In this Semester 1 Recap, Teacher Wenlong, Teacher Wangtong, and Teacher Jeremiah will be sharing more about this semester’s learning focus, students’ progress, and the upcoming June Holiday Programme.

“Building a Strong Algebra Foundation”
Hi everyone, I’m Teacher Wenlong. 😊
During the first half of Sec 1, our main focus was on Sec 1 algebra. Within one semester, we guided students through the full Sec 1 algebra syllabus while also introducing some Sec 2 algebra topics.

Sec 1 is a very important year for algebra learning. Topics such as algebraic simplification, factorisation, and solving equations all rely heavily on strong calculation skills. Because of this, we first focused on rational number calculations before gradually introducing different question types and problem-solving methods.

This semester, I also saw a lot of student growth. One student in particular started off struggling even with basic positive and negative number calculations, but can now independently solve much more complex rational number questions. She also progressed from the Cultivation Class to the Innovation Class. To me, this kind of confidence and improvement built through long-term effort is much more meaningful than a single test result.

“Adjusting to Secondary School Math”
Hi parents and students, I’m Teacher Wangtong. 😊
For many students entering secondary school, the biggest challenge is not just that the questions become harder, but that their learning approach needs to change.
This semester, we mainly covered algebra basics, negative numbers, equations, geometry, and application questions. Compared to primary school math, secondary math places much greater emphasis on concept understanding and logical explanation.

During lessons, I also noticed that many students still rely too much on “feeling” when solving questions, without having clear working steps or proper problem-solving structure. Because of this, besides teaching concepts, we also focused on helping students develop stronger learning habits through daily practice, redo work, and classroom discussions.
I’m very encouraged to see many students becoming more proactive this semester. Students who were initially afraid of algebra or lacked confidence are now more willing to ask questions and solve problems independently.

The Next Step|Tr Wenlong & Tr Wangtong's June Holiday Plan for S1
After building a strong foundation in Sec 1 algebra during Semester 1, our June Holiday Programme will focus on Sec 1 geometry.
Unlike primary school geometry, secondary school geometry introduces proof questions. Students are no longer simply calculating answers, but also learning how to explain their thinking and logic step by step.
During the June Holiday Programme, we will focus on building students’ Sec 1 geometry foundation while training their proof-writing logic and mathematical presentation skills, preparing them for more advanced geometry learning in Semester 2.

“Developing Deeper Understanding Through More Advanced Math”
Hi Hi, I’m Teacher Jeremiah! 😼
During the first half of Sec 2, our main focus was on Sec 2 algebra, while also introducing some Sec 3 algebra topics.

Compared to Sec 1, Sec 2 algebra becomes much more challenging. Topics such as systems of inequalities, quadratic equations, quadratic functions, and algebraic fractions are all key challenging areas in Sec 2 math.

Many students begin experiencing fluctuations in their results after moving into Sec 2 because mathematical concepts become much more connected. For example, quadratic functions and quadratic equations are very closely related.

Because of this, we have always followed the approach of “learning earlier and learning deeper”, helping students build stronger foundations early so they can gradually develop deeper understanding through more advanced practice and application questions.

The Next Step|S2 June Holiday Plan by Tr Jeremaih
After focusing on algebra during Semester 1, our June Holiday Programme will shift towards Sec 2 geometry.
If Sec 1 geometry is students’ first exposure to proof questions, then Sec 2 geometry is where students begin learning formal geometric proofs more systematically.
Topics such as congruency, similarity, Pythagoras’ Theorem, and trigonometric ratios are all major concepts that continue throughout secondary school math and are heavily tested in O-Level examinations.
During the June Holiday Programme, we will focus on strengthening these foundations while helping students develop proper proof-writing logic and habits to prepare for more advanced learning later on.

In Conclusion
As students progress through secondary school math, learning becomes more than just solving questions — it’s also about building stronger logical thinking and connecting different concepts together.
At Kangaroo Study, we hope to help students build strong foundations, clearer thinking, and greater confidence in math as they continue progressing into Semester 2 💪
