1. P3 - The Starting Phase of Streaming

In P1 and P2, students face little academic pressure as there are almost no major school exams. However, starting in P3, a series of important selection points appear—the GEP selection test, P4 streaming exams, various math competitions, DSA applications, and eventually the PSLE.

To face these confidently, preparation must start early. The P2 → P3 transition is a critical stage. By this point, students already have the understanding and calculation skills necessary to begin Olympiad-level problem-solving.

2. What Challenges Will Students Face?

Challenge 1: A brand-new HAL selection assessment, making preparation direction hard to grasp.

The traditional GEP format has been completely canceled, but the new policy still retains one round of the P3 HAL selection assessment. What is the focus of the assessment? How can students escape ineffective rote learning to prepare efficiently and improve their scores accurately? The exam questions are flexible and heavily emphasize thinking; blindly doing questions makes it difficult to form a stable competitive edge.

Challenge 2: Calculation Gap.

As learning moves past the foundation-building stage, the difficulty increases, and the demands on calculation intensity, accuracy, and speed rise significantly. Many students can understand the problem-solving logic but continue to lose points due to calculation errors, dragging down their overall scores.

Challenge 3: Climbing difficulty in word problems and lack of systematic problem-solving methods.

The types of word problems are increasing and becoming more comprehensive. Without a complete set of problem-solving thinking tools, children will find it difficult to flexibly transfer knowledge and will easily become confused when facing complex problems.

3. How Do We Help Students Deal with the Challenges?

Although the original GEP format has been completely cancelled, the new system still retains one round of testing. The content of the test is expected to be similar to the original content, just slightly lower in difficulty, so GEP exam knowledge is still key learning content.

At Kangaroo Study, we have deeply researched the school curriculum and top school exam papers, collected past year questions, and combined them with the experience of GEP class students to summarize the GEP math exam points. Furthermore, aligning with students' cognitive patterns, we logically break them down and integrate them with the Math Olympiad framework, distributing these contents into the long-term P2 and P3 courses to help students lay a solid foundation.

4. Course Outline

Learning Arrangements for Each Module

(1) Calculation – Consolidating the Foundation and Learning Techniques

Calculation is the fundamental skill in learning mathematics. The HAL exam is time-intensive with a large number of questions, placing high demands on students' calculation proficiency! Furthermore, starting from P4, students will progressively learn fraction and decimal calculations, both of which are built upon integer calculation skills. Therefore, before expanding to broader number domains, we will fully help students consolidate their foundation in the integer calculation module. During the year-end holiday, based on multi-digit multiplication and division, they will further learn smart multiplication and division. In the first semester of next year, they will completely finish learning integer four operations and smart calculations, helping students solve integer four operations from both accuracy and speed aspects!

(2) Word Problems – Stabilizing the Basics and Building a System

The word problem module has always been a key focus in primary school mathematics and a major testing point for GEP, making up as high as 42% of the first-round mathematics test.

However, there are many types of word problems, and many students cannot even interpret the questions, so word problems are also the difficulty of the entire primary school learning.

This year-end holiday, we will start with the basic Sum-Multiple problems and Difference-Multiple problems to help students build problem-solving habits for word problems, experience how to turn the abstract into the intuitive, and become familiar with solving word problems using the model method. In the first semester of next year, we will go a step further, comprehensively finishing the top ten basic word problems, summarizing the characteristics of each type, building a knowledge system for word problems, and helping students systematically solve the difficulties of word problem learning!

5. Teacher Introduction

Parents and students speak highly of Teacher Smith’s engaging teaching style.

6. Teaching Model

Three Key Features

  • Parent Observation – One parent may sit in during class to observe without disrupting lessons.

  • Refund Anytime – Tuition is refundable on a pro-rated basis.

  • Dual-Teacher Classroom – One main teacher delivers lessons while an assistant provides real-time student feedback.

Teaching Principles

  • Guidance over Spoon-Feeding – We never directly give solutions or force memorization.

  • No Leaving Without Understanding – Students must correct all errors from pre-tests, homework, class examples, and post-tests before leaving.

  • Cultivating Achievement – We encourage rather than criticize, fostering confidence and motivation.

Nine-Step Teaching Cycle

From example explanation to post-class review, ensuring mastery and strong study habits.
