The NMOS exam in 2023 has finished, the upcoming challenges for P5 students are the RIPMWC and SMOPS exams scheduled for the next year. How can we proactively ready ourselves for these two exams, beginning our preparation well in advance for the coming year? Basic Information of RIPMWC and SMOPS Below is the basic information for the RIPMWC and SMOPS exams, including details about the organizers, timing, dates, and eligibility criteria.

Please be aware that the dates provided are for reference in the year 2023, and the exact schedule for the year 2024 is subject to potential changes. However, we anticipate that Round 1 of the RIPMWC and SMOPS exams will likely be scheduled in the middle of March and April, respectively.
Difference of Round 1 and Round 2
Both RIPMWC and SMOPS are similar to NMOS exam as they consist of round 1 and round 2:
Distinguishing these two exams from NMOS are variations in their time duration and question volume. Furthermore, the RIPMWC features two categories: a junior category encompassing P1-P5 and an open category for P6. While both categories share the same paper in Round 1, they diverge in their Round 2 papers. Round 1 Awards Classification Awards for the NMOS exam are determined by the combined scores students achieve in both the preliminary round and the special round. Conversely, in the case of RIPMWC and SMOPS, awards are distributed independently based on performance in each respective round. For RIPMWC, awards for Round 1 are contingent upon the percentile ranking within the cohort for that particular year:

On the other hand, awards for Round 1 of SMOPS depend on the subsequent percentile ranking within the cohort:

Invitation Into Round 2 Regarding the RIPMWC, participants in the following categories will receive invitations to Round 2:
Junior: The highest 2% or approximately the top 40 students, whichever is lower
Open: The highest 3% or approximately the top 60 students, whichever is lower
For SMOPS, the top 4% of local participants or approximately the top 120 students, whichever is lower, will be selected for Round 2. Additionally, the top 10 participants from various overseas centers will also be included. Preparation Guide to RIPMWC and SMOPS When we contrast the average distribution of various modules in recent NMOS exams with that of the RIPMWC and SMOPS exams, a distinct pattern emerges. Notably, RIPMWC incorporates a notably higher proportion of geometry problems, whereas SMOPS displays a more balanced distribution across topics. Analyzing these trends can offer valuable insights into strategizing our preparation for these two exams following this year's NMOS.

This leads us to a frequently held misconception: "Since I've already tackled the NMOS exam, I can just skip those topics for the NMOS and concentrate solely on the new subjects introduced in RIPMWC and SMOPS, right?"
This is totally wrong. Despite the overlap in topics between RIPMWC, SMOPS, and the NMOS exams, the nature of the questions changes significantly. They demand a more thorough and profound comprehension, rendering them notably more challenging. Take the following two questions from NMOS and RIPMWC as example:

Solving geometry problems in the NMOS becomes straightforward with a grasp of the equal-height model. However, when approaching geometry problems in RIPMWC, a more sophisticated model ("the bird-head model") derived from the equal-height model is necessary. This demands a deeper and more thorough understanding of the preceding NMOS topics. This illustrates that familiarity with topics covered in the NMOS doesn't necessarily equate to mastery in the context of the RIPMWC and SMOPS.
